MalaMala
Main Camp is the largest of the three camps and offers an authentic view of
the forefathers of the traditional African safari from decades past.
Mala Mala is situated in the eastern
part of South Africa in the province of Mpumalanga. It
shares a common border of 19km / 12 miles with the
Kruger National Park and is part of a conservation gene
pool that covers 5.5 million acres of land in the heart
of the South African Lowveld.
This low lying region of flat bush country contains
habitat types ranging from riverine thicket to open
savannah.
Because of its latitude and elevation,
malarial mosquitoes
and tsetse flies kept man and his domesticated beasts at
bay for centuries, allowing nature to flourish
undisturbed.
Today this area is known to have the greatest
diversification of animal species on the African
continent.
Over two hundred different species occur in abundance
whilst the ever changing bird life provides even the
most experienced ornithologist with rare finds.
Mala Mala is South Africa’s legendary and exclusive
safari destination. Internationally acknowledged as “the
top game viewing destination in the world”, it is set in
beautiful surroundings on the banks of the Sand River.
18 thatched rooms (including luxury rooms, luxury suites, family rooms and a
disabled unit) are free-standing, scattered along the perimeter of the camp
with a panoramic view of the Sand River beyond huge trees and manicured
green lawns. Each unit has 24 hour air conditioning, two bathrooms en-suite
(a signature of MalaMala Game Reserve), and a private shaded deck area.
Mala Mala sets the standard for exclusive safari camps:
The
original private safari experience and the first private game reserve to
make the transition from a hunting safari to a photographic safari in
1964.
The
largest tract of land in the Sabi Sand Reserve (over 30 000 acres)
sharing an unfenced border with the Kruger National Park – no more than
66 guests occupy this massive tract of space.
The
game viewing experience is unrivalled – often documented on National
Geographic, within wildlife publications and a must on any
photo-journalists lifetime wish list! 99% of guests leave after a 3
night stay having experienced interactions with the Big 5, as well as
the many smaller creatures who are an integral part of the safari
experience.
The Sable Camp embraces the same atmosphere as MalaMala Main Camp and is
located on its’ southern most point. It however affords the discerning
traveler with a more exclusive and luxurious experience in only 7 beautiful
suites.
Rattray’s on
MalaMala is the new addition to the MalaMala
portfolio. It offers an unprecedented level of classic style and luxury.
Only 8 Khayas (meaning “home” in Zulu) afford a maximum of 16 guests with
elegance, superior service and the trademark game viewing for which MalaMala
has become world renowned. Each suite affords the business traveler with a
private laptop computer connected to the world web 24 hours a day via
satellite, as well as large screen televisions and DVDS. These facilities
are however optional as MalaMala still supports the bush enthusiast who
wishes to escape the technology of a modern day life for a bush experience
reflective of a time long past.
Children’s Policy:
MalaMala
Main Camp accepts children of all ages (although those of 4 and under are
not permitted on drives unless parents have reserved an exclusive safari
vehicle – nor are they permitted for dinner in the boma).
Sable Camp
and Rattray’s on MalaMala do not accept children under the age of 16.
Activities:
2 game drives per day, one
early morning and one late afternoon into the evening, in open safari
vehicles with a qualified ranger (most of whom have a degree in one of
the field sciences) and an experienced Shangaan tracker.
Guided bush walks are also
offered.
MalaMala and Sable Camp
never allocate more than 6 guests per vehicle, whilst Rattray’s on
MalaMala seats no more than 4 guests per vehicle.
