Malaria Prevention

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that you take prescription medicine to prevent malaria infection. If you are traveling to a high-risk region for malaria, you should visit your doctor 4-6 weeks before your trip.

As you travel, follow these guidelines to reduce your risk of infection and take precautionary measures to prevent contact with mosquitoes:

  1. sleeping under a bed net or in a room/tent with mosquito proofing (remember to keep the flaps zipped at all times)

  2. making use of a mosquito-repelling lotion or stick  with the ingredient DEET on your skin

  3. Wear long-sleeved clothing, long trousers and socks when possible, especially from dusk till dawn when mosquitoes are most active.

Contact your doctor for the best prophylactics for you.

It is imperative that you discuss the best option for yourself with your doctor.

Mefloquine which is sold under the trade name Lariam® and another effective alternative drug is Malerone.
